“I believe that we live in a consumer society, where our economic status, power, religion and media are predominant. We are taught that we all need to have needs that, consequently, we have to fulfil. The world around us is based on concepts, shaped after a truth invented by humans, but is that also the reality? Constructs aimed at short-term development, our intelligence, our economic and work-related status. But what are the long-term consequences for the human nature of the individual, for future generations, society in general and the planet? An idiocracy?
Our time in life is limited. What if, as in other cultures, we embrace our inevitable death? What if we see the final part of our life as a very last ride on a fairground attraction, a game show with the ultimate Grand Prize, The End of a movie or the highest achievable goal of a project? What is really important until then?”
Birgit Verwer has been exhibiting since 2010 artworks and installations in solo, duo and group exhibitions. Amongst others at the Verbeke Foundation in Belgium, gallery Sebastiaan Brandl in Cologne, Villa Zebra museum in Rotterdam (supported by the Mondriaan Foundation), Livingstone gallery in The Hague, PAN Amsterdam, Maison et Objet Paris and Pulse Art Fair New York.
Works included in corporate and private collections a.o. in the Netherlands, Germany, Slovakia, China, United States. Artist-in-residencies in Dehua, China and Berlin, Germany.
Bigit Verwer studied at the Royal Academy of Art [KABK], Fine Arts, The Hague (2005-2010). She currently lives and works in Halle, the Netherlands
